Suppression, marginalization and enslavement are all practices that have been practiced by the Houthis against women in Yemen, not to mention displacement as well as being subjected to sexist insults.
In the past few days, the Houthis’ violence and mistreatment of women has drastically intensified, charging random women on the streets with prostitution for walking alone or with no male-guardian, and rounding them up for dress code infringements.
It is no secret that at this point the militia is conducting an “ISIS-like” behavior against women in areas under their control.
From preventing them to use makeup and smartphones, to banning them from working in restaurants and cafes, they are not to mingle with men in public places like universities or libraries, and anyone who violates this will be fined 200,000 YR.
On Sunday, men of different high-profile tribes in Yemen have gathered to protest and defend their wives, sisters, and mothers’ rights to be humans, and to practice their everyday tasks in peace without the fear of being arbitrarily arrested by the terrors group.
“The Iran-backed Houthi militia increases the suffering of women, especially with regard to opportunities to improve livelihoods and job opportunities in the public and private sectors,” she said, adding that the Houthis punished bus and taxi drivers in Sanaa for ferrying unescorted women.
Zafaran Zaid, a Yemeni human rights activist and lawyer who was sentenced to death in absentia by a Houthi-run court said in an interview.
The women in Yemen are no different than any group of women in the world, they are helpless against the violence of men, and in this case they are helpless against a terrorist militia whose violence and crimes happen to be ignored by the media. They can’t reach out or particpate in the Me Too movement, they can’t share their stories, they are silenced and it is outrageous how the UN and the world is not doing anything about it.
